The situation in Yemen

"the largest man made disaster since World War II"

Yemen is the most impoverished country in the Middle East and one of the poorest in the world, ranking 165th out of 167 on the Legatum Prosperity Index™.

Yemen has suffered greatly during the ongoing proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia which has been played out in Yemen since 2015. This Sky News video briefly explains the situation in Yemen:

According to UNICEF, after 10 years of war, Yemen remains one of the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with 24.1 million people – 80%
of the population, in need of humanitarian aid and protection.
More than 14 million people are in acute need, and more than 3 million people have been displaced from their homes since 2015.

The UN have described the situation in Yemen as the largest man made disaster since World War 2. It is the responsibility of civilised societies to attempt alleviating the suffering of others when they see it.

What we do

CPS Norway adopts a holistic approach to improving the lives of the people it serves by

  •  Addressing the immediate physical needs through emergency  aid, including food and medical treatment.
  •  Addressing the trauma of growing up in and living through wartime  experiences.
  • Helping communities learn new ways to solve conflict and rebuilding peace.
  • Equipping young adults with the soft skills to contribute to building a peaceful and harmounius future.

We work closely with carefully selected local partners who implement these projects with the same heart and vision.

Food and Medical Relief

Yemen is now the world’s largest man-made food security crisis. However, this crisis is not driven by a lack of food in the country. Rather, Yemen’s food crisis is driven by factors constraining the supply, distribution and people’s diminishing purchasing power. Ongoing conflict and economic decline have steadily eroded people’s coping mechanisms, leaving large parts of the population at the risk of famine.

Every month, we help approximately 500 IDP families and other impoverished families, widows and disabled people, with either food baskets or medical care, as well as trauma recovery courses for  traumatized children.

Shamla's Story

A family faced starvation and neglect. Through our food relief efforts, they received nutritious meals, restoring their health and hope for the future.

Admed's story

A father's tragic accident left him unable to provide for his family. Our food aid program is providing reassurance and even peace in their difficult situation.

Psychosocial Support

Since the beginning of the conflict, thousands of children have been killed or maimed, and thousands more have been recruited into the fighting. Millions of children are left in need of mental health and psychosocial services.

The ongoing humanitarian crisis has increased the vulnerability of children to exploitation, violence and abuse, child labour, killing and
maiming, recruitment and use of children by parties to the conflict as combatants and in various support roles, domestic and gender-based violence, child marriage and psychosocial distress.

Our partners are on the ground to help them cope with the impact of conflict, and to help recover and resume their childhood through the following 2 programs:

War Trauma Recovery

Children growing up in war lack the development resources to process what they are experiencing. Our 'I will be fine' program helps 8-14 year old children and their parents deal with Post-Traumatic Stress and re-engage with life.

Sexual Abuse Awareness

War increase the risk for children of exploitation and sexual abuse. Our 'Child Ambassadors' program helps children understand their true value and recognise unacceptable behaviour and learn how to say 'No!'.

Reem's Story

Reem was able to apply what she learnt at one of our programs about how to protect herself in a threatening situation - to stay strong, act decisively, and call for help.

Riad's story

Children traumatized by violence struggled to cope. Our trauma recovery program helped Riaz in managing his fear, express his feelings and support others.

Conflict Resolution & Peace Building

Our projects go beyond emergency humanitarian assistance to recovery and rebuilding the emotional lives of people most affected by war.

Our “Your Relationships…Your Life” program help participants
resolve conflicts through better communication, deepening
their relationships, managing anger and growing a vision for peace and
reconciliation in their community.

“In the past I used to get really angry easily, but after this course something happened to me and when someone made me angry and, in that moment, I controlled my anger. The next day this this person came to me and wanted me to forgive him and I did”

Future Leaders

According to the United Nations Population Fund, 30% of Yemen’s  population is under the age of 30. The consequences of the ongoing crisis have curtailed their access to basic services, education, and employment opportunities.

Empowering the youth is a crucial part for the nation’s future. Our ‘Youth Solution’ courses form a comprehensive training program that help youth start a journey to becoming positive members and future leaders.

“Before the course I didn’t have enthusiasm , but now I am very enthusiastic and I will never forget this course. I have discovered my potential”

The program empowers and inspires them to build character, purpose and self-confidence. They discover their unique personal traits, learn to appreciate and value positive qualities in others.

“After completing this program, it is impossible to return to how you were before. It’s like your sense of character was born again.”
